Small-time Mafioso Nicky steals from his boss and finds himself alone after his accomplice is killed. He asks for help from his old friend Mikey, who is also a criminal and on the payroll of the gangster Nicky stole from. Mikey agrees to “escort” his friend out of town, but on the way, between a quick film, a visit to Nicky’s mother’s grave and another stopover in a bar, where they get caught up in a brawl, the two friends rekindle “Peter Falk and I will be making a film with Elaine May called Mikey and Nicky, which we’re in love with. The hope of course is that people stay crazy. It’s really no fun to work with sane people, people who have a set way of doing things. […] A lot of it is chemistry. I mean, I’d want to work with Orson Welles. I don’t mind about the problems, because he is an incredible man. That’s also the reason I’m looking forward to playing with Peter Falk and Ben Gazzara. We don’t care what the problems will be. As long we stay crazy.” (John Cassavetes)
jealousy and grudges that were never put to rest.
