Shot in Rolle at the filmmaker’s home, in Fresnoy and at the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the film features encounters between Jean-Luc Godard and various different people such as Dominique Païni, André S. Labarthe, Jean Narboni, Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet. These discussions develop thinking about History, politics and cinema and the issues raised are taken from the series of lectures that Godard proposed to the Collège de France, but which were rejected. This aborted project engendered a desire to make nine films constituting a theoretical, historical and critical look at film and television. “Probably, Godard has never opened himself up so much, has never exposed himself to this extent, in what he himself hoped would be a film that showed him at work, discussing things, pondering. He always respected the contract that put him at the center of an indiscreet documentary eye, and always played the game in the various circumstances, but without admitting the possibility or the legitimacy of a cinema that came after his, nor, even more, of a cinema that was close to him.”

Alain Fleischer
(Paris, 1944) studied Literature and then taught at various universities, art and film schools. A well-known photographer, he notably represented France at the Kwang-Ju Biennale in South Korea, and that of Havana, in Cuba. He is also an artist, writer and filmmaker. He has written and directed a hundred films, ranging from experimental cinema with L’aventure générale (1980), through fiction with Rome-Roméo (1989) and Un Monde agité (2003) and art documentary, notably on and with Christian Boltanski. He is also the artistic director of the Fresnoy national studio for the Contemporary Arts which he founded at the instigation of the French minister of culture.
