1989. Bruno Nardelli is a worker at the steel factory in Piombino and
is married to Mirella, who works the cash register at a big supermarket.
One evening, the couple goes to see an amateur play supporting the
workers of Piombino, who are on strike. Mirella meets Gerry Fumo,
a local TV announcer, and is taken with him. Bruno hardly seems
to notice what is going on right under his nose, he is too busy with
other thoughts. The steel factory is in trouble and has laid its workers
off, the strike isn’t having any effect. His only hope is to do something
with his friends, who hope to leave the squalor of their lives behind
and daydream about an unrealistic entrepreneurial future in steel
laminates. Neglected by Bruno, Mirella gives in to Fumo’s flattery.
She tricks her husband and then betrays him.
