LES SEPT JOURS

THE SEVEN DAYS
by Ronit Elkabetz, Shlomi Elkabetz
Country: Israel
Year: 2008
Duration: 115'

According to the Jewish tradition of Shiva, when a family member
dies, all the relatives must spend seven days together in the house
of the departed person. Thus, when Ohayn dies, his large family arrives
to respect the tradition. The Gulf War is being fought and the threat
of a missile attack is a daily presence. During Shiva, earthly problems
should be kept at bay, but the war and old family rivalries prevail over
grief and the atmosphere becomes increasingly tense.

“According to the religious law, the bereaved are not allowed to leave
home for seven days. Mourners are not allowed to sleep in a bed, sit
on a chair, wash or shave, put on fresh clothes... Besides, during the
Gulf War people stayed at home because they were afraid of a
chemical or nuclear attack. We had this in mind when we chose the
setting of the movie. All the family members were confined to a small
house against their will and all of them wished to flee. The situation
was bound to lead to conflict; not to just a row but an explosion.”
