LULU AND JIMI
Germany, the Fifties. Lulu, a girl from a well-heeled, German family, meets Jimi, the son of a damaged African American World War II veteran, and falls head over heels in love. Lulu’s mother, Gertrud, together with her secret lover, Schultz, and a wicked old shrink, Von Oppeln, do all in their power to tear the two lovers apart, but the trio are only the first of many obstacles that will stand in the way of the couple’s passion.
“I wanted to make a film about an unconditional, great love. A film – almost ‘tactile’ – where I could draw on unlimited resources and pull out all the stops. I had my eye on making a genre film, and I wanted to put everything in it that’s fun for the audience, and what’s fun for me, starting with fights, these wild dance and party scenes, and going all the way to scenes that take place at night in bed, when two people talk about their yearnings. Maybe Lulu and Jimi is also really an homage to David Lynch, who is perhaps my greatest idol among the film directors who are still alive.”

Oskar Roehler
Oskar Roehler (Starnberg, Germany, 1959) started his career as a screenwriter and in 1995 he directed his first film, Gentleman, which celebrated its premiere at the Munich Film Festival. After Sylvester Countdown, which screened at the Toronto Film Festival in 1997, No Place to Go (2000), was his breakthrough. The film was awarded the gold German Film Award. In 2003 he directed Angst that was in the competition at the Berlinale. His next film, Agnes and His Brothers, screened at the Horizon Series at the International Film Festival in Venice. In 2006, he adapted Michel Houellebecq’s novel The Elementary Particles, for which Moritz Bleibtreu received the Silver Bear as best actor at the Berlinale.
