vital signs When Simone’s grandmother dies, the girl returns to Quebec City and finds herself involved in the daily events of life and death in a center for palliative cures. She radically reconsiders her existence and abandons her studies and her boyfriend to dedicate herself completely to the patients at the center. Boris, her boyfriend, doesn’t accept being dismissed this way and forces Simone to reflect on her sudden vocation, which perhaps is only a way for her to avoid facing up to her own weaknesses. “My fiction work always starts with a deep research and draws heavily on the world of documentary. Mixing experienced actors with newcomers and drawing from their past and singularities allows them to invest their characters personally. The camera can then capture the effect of time, the marks of accidents and the moments of delights that are left on their bodies and faces. A kind of transformative beauty becomes apparent, showing strength and fragility at once.”
