neds Glasgow, the early ‘70s. John McGill is a bright, sensitive boy who wants to study but instead has to struggle with a hostile school environment and a family which is victimized by his father’s alcoholism. John makes a decision and joins a gang of Neds (Non-Educated Delinquents). Bolstered by his brother’s status, John is caught up in a growing spiral of crime, drugs and violence. But when he decides to break free he has to find a way to escape a situation over which he has no control. “I think the best, though not the only, way to describe my overall approach to filming Neds is ‘impressionistic’, in the sense that composition, lighting, mise-en-scene will be determined as much by the inner life of the protagonist as by the events and people who affect him. I want the film to be bold. It has to create a unique, mysterious, volatile and often violent world, at the centre of which is a young boy trying desperately to work out his place within it.”
