The girls in long dresses and high heels, with a corsage the same color as their dress; the boys wearing dark suits and freshly-shined shoes: in a garden full of tables laden with drinks and sparkling glasses, it seems like the typical end-of-the-year prom marking the end of the school year and bringing together young people and their parents in an atmosphere of shared festivity. But underneath that surface of apparent normality is lurking the seed of a true tribal rite, bloody and devastating. “This particular film was developed from a poem I wrote one night after witnessing the aftermath of a high school formal. At first it was kind of magical. The girls and boys were resplendent in their eveningwear. They held hands and seemed to be almost dancing down the footpath, but as the procession went on, things became more sinister. To me these teenagers, dressed so elegantly and behaving so bestially, symbolised a conflict, present within us all… and so I made a film about it”.
