Minersville, Pennsylvania, 1989. Martin, a six-year-old boy who suffers from a genetic disease which makes him unable to feel pain, is kidnapped while playing in the yard at home. The kidnapper, a psychopath named Graham Sutter, is convinced that he has to sacrifice human lives in order to atone for his sins and he forces the boy to watch him commit atrocious crimes. Nobody has any news of the boy for five long years, until young Allison moves to the area and starts to explore the surroundings, thus discovering the horror that is hidden at Graham’s farm. “Bereavement is a dark film to be certain, but I explored the subject matter truthfully, which is the only way I felt it could be presented. Some will find it offensive. But I felt that there was room in the genre for a more serious take on violent subject matter, one that showcased the characters not as stereotypical victims, but as human beings, with lives, hopes, dreams and real problems. And how violence can shatter not only those involved directly, but those who love that person too.”
