Ten acts to recount the origins of Italy and its civilization. Accompanied by the music of Claudio Monteverdi, verses by the great poets of Italian literature, read by Giorgio Albertazzi, and images of the Alps and Apennines, the film is a true representation of myths and legends that traces Italian history, from the Romans to the Middle Ages, and recounts the odyssey of a man journeying to the land of his forefathers. “Anyone who has ever tried to paint a landscape, or has simply contemplated the rising sun from a hillside, will immediately understand the virtues of this film. It isn’t so much attempting to describe a particular moment, as it is to explore phenomenological potential (one of the reasons why it is important to see it on a big screen). A landscape is like the mother of a people and its culture. There is also an urgency in this story: by contemplating the divinity of nature, people and things, the film is trying to recover a dignity which I think is missing from today’s world.”
