Luba, an immigrant from Belarus, meets Ben, a French hobo who lives on the edge of Forgotten Lake. As they try to find a place for the girl to spend the night, the two wonder how to communicate despite the linguistic barriers. “LubaBen is about fictionalizing reality, pushing the limits between fiction and documentary. The actors play their own parts, and they actually meet for the first time on the first take of the shooting. The camera follows their journey, their torments, triggering actions and reactions. From this point of view, the real footage of Belorussian street fights between civilians and police is not an insert into fiction, but LubaBen is a fiction composed of different layers of documentary.”
