Vicky Barton and her brother Johnny travel from Great Britain to Paris to visit the Universal Exposition of 1889. After having dinner with Johnny, Vicky retires to her room, while the man continues his evening. On his way back to the hotel, he meets the painter George Hathaway, who borrows some money from him. This is the last time Johnny is seen in Paris and the next morning he is declared missing. His sister Vicky looks in vain all over the city trying to find him, but the hotel’s owners and the police get in her way, questioning whether Johnny ever even existed. The only person willing to help Vicky is George, the painter, who falls in love with her after she seeks him out.
A very young Jean Simmons and Dirk Bogarde in one of the first movies made by Terence Fisher (and by the producer Anthony Darnborough), screened in collaboration with Intesa San Paolo in occasion of Expo Milano 2015.

Antony Darnborough
Antony Darnborough (Weybridge, UK, 1913 - UK, 2000) produced some of the most successful movies in British cinema after World War II. He is known for producing the big screen adaptations of Somerset Maugham’s works (Quartet, 1948; Trio, 1950; Encore, 1951), and for his collaborations with Terence Fisher. His career in cinema was short, spanning from 1948 to 1956.

Terence Fisher
Terence Fisher (London, UK, 1904-1980) started working in cinema as an editor and production director first, and then as a filmmaker, directing a wide variety of movies. After meeting in the Fifties the production company Hammer, he came up with a whole new genre of B movies mixing fantasy and horror, which made him famous.
