RAK TI KHON KAEN

CEMETERY OF SPLENDOUR
by Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Country: Thailand, UK, France, Germany, Malaysia
Year: 2015
Duration: 122'

A mysterious illness, which forces people to fall asleep, has struck a platoon of soldiers. After being transferred to a hospital set up inside a former school at Khon Kaen, the men are watched over by nurses and volunteers, including the housewife Jen, who takes care of Itt, caring for him as he sleeps and accompanying him around during his brief waking moments. In a place where memories of the past still live on and blend with the present, Jen makes friends with the medium Keng, who uses her psychic powers to communicate with sick people.

Declaration

film director

“The film is a search for the old spirits I knew as a child. My parents were doctors and we lived in one of the hospital housing units. My world was the patients’ ward where my mother worked, our wood house, a school, and a cinema. The film is a merging of these places. I haven’t lived in my home town for almost twenty years. The city has changed so much. But when I went back I only saw my old memories superimposed on the new buildings.”
