Jean Painlevé
Jean Painlevé (France, 1902-1989), after studying biology, joined the avant-garde art and film movements of the 1920s and 1930s, developing innovative photographic techniques to take pictures of underwater creatures. In 1934, he made L’hippocampe, ou cheval marin (1934), the first film ever to be shot underwater. He founded and directed the Institut du cinéma scientifique. Between 1925 and 1982, he made over two hundred movies, most of which with his partner Geneviéve and his collaborators Maurice Jaubert, Pierre Henry and François de Roubaix.

Geneviève Hamon
Geneviève Hamon (France, 1905-1989) is Jean Painlevé’s partner and collaborator. She started being credited as his codirector in the 1960s, even though she had been participating in his productions since the 1920s, setting up the underwater scenes, taking care of the animals, doing camera work and documentation. Beside her work in filmmaking, she was also a graphic artist in advertisement, fashion, and visual arts.

“The octopus was the subject of my first public film in 1927, a black-and-white documentary filmed in Port Blanc, where I was staying with my friends the Hamons. One of their daughters, Geneviève, became my indispensable collaborator. Around 1958, we began another film, in color, The Love Life of the Octopus, at the Arago Laboratory in Banyuls, in the Eastern Pyrenees. The project lasted ten years, since August was the only month of the year during which one could monitor the laying and development of the eggs.” (Jean Painlevé)
