San Francisco, the 1960s. Simon is a university student; although he doesn’t have a true political conscience, his roommates convince him to take part in a campus strike. Since he is, above all, motivated by a desire to meet girls, he begins to actively participate in occupying the university. Simon begins to believe strongly in the protest called by the student movement but the movement will be repressed in blood by the authorities, in a crescendo of tension and unjustified violence. [rm]

Stuart Hagmann
Stuart Hagmann (Sturgeon Bay, WI, USA, 1942) began his directing career in television, directing four episodes of the series Mannix and three episodes of Mission Impossible between 1968 and 1969. In 1970, he debuted on the silver screen with The Strawberry Statement, a controversial film due to its openly political approach which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He next directed Believe in Me (1971), which wasn’t as successful as the previous film, and the TV movies She Lives! (1973) and Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo (1977).

“When it came time to shoot The Strawberry Statement I tried to put myself back in that time when I was in college. I wanted the film to be a collage. The screenplay wasn’t conventional by any means either, and as I said, the novel wasn’t traditional either. I was influenced by the film Midnight Cowboy (1969). I wanted to make a Hollywood film that implemented experimental techniques just as that film had done.”
