ARCHIPELAGO

ARCHIPELAGO
by Camilla Insom, Giulio Squillacciotti
Country: Italy
Year: 2017
Duration: 63'

In the south of Iran, there is a group of islands of the Persian Gulf where humans and spirits have coexisted for centuries. The culture and traditions of these islands are the result of the encounters between Iran, African and Arab countries, which have generated a unique system of syncretic beliefs. Spirits from different traditions and origins called Bād (the Persian word for “wind”) move through the air, taking possession of the islanders’ bodies and can only be quieted through a music ceremony called the Zār Ritual.

Declaration

film director

“The film results from the collaboration between an anthropologist and a filmmaker. Even though our respective fields differ in approach and translation, we immediately found a common ground. We were both interested in the idea of a tradition originating from different cultures that merged together in a given place. As filmmakers, we metaphorically disappear from the picture, where Iran’s islands serve as the backdrop to a story told through the daily lives and rituals of the islanders.”
