Ida was born in 1936. For over fifteen years, she has been living in total isolation in her home. The only contact she cultivates is with her “little ones,” about forty pigeons she takes care of. Her situation becomes socially unacceptable when the birds begin to live inside her apartment, triggering the complaints of her neighbors and the intervention of her cousin Fiorella. The result is a dramatic upheaval in Ida’s life.

Declaration

film director

“In December 2014, I learned about Ida’s story. At first I was curious about the psychological motivations which led to her isolation and compulsive passion for the pigeons. Fiorella’s overbearing arrival catalyzes the changes both in where the film was going and in Ida’s life. Fiorella sets up an authoritarian system and forces Ida to behave in a socially acceptable manner. Only in this phase did I feel that I needed to go in another direction. So I abandoned the idea of researching Ida’s past and became a witness to the drama that was unfolding. The movie’s destiny gets its meaning from the truth as it emerges.”
