An eccentric businessman, owner of Brooklyn’s baseball team, bequeaths his entire estate to Rhubarb, a stray cat whom he adopted. When he passes away, the cat inherits the man’s fortune and is entrusted to his young friend Eric Yeager. The baseball players feel ridiculed for having a cat as the team’s owner, but Eric convinces them that Rhubarb will actually bring them good luck on the field. Encouraged by the superstition, the team actually starts winning one game after another. But the gambling ring doesn’t take kindly to the cat’s winning streak, and someone plots to eliminate Rhubarb to throw the team’s odds in their upcoming game against Manhattan.

Biography

film director

Arthur Lubin

Arthur Lubin (Los Angeles, CA, USA, 1898 - Glendale, CA, USA, 1995) moved around a lot in his childhood and youth: Arizona, then San Diego, and finally New York. There, he started performing on stage in a few comedies that weren’t particularly successful, which prompted him to move again, this time to Los Angeles. He had better luck in cinema, so much so that the “Los Angeles Times” named him one of the talented young actors of 1925. As he later admitted, his experience as a performer turned out to be fundamental later on in his prolific career as a filmmaker. He directed several features, including Phantom of the Opera (1943), New Orleans (1947), the series of movies starring the mule Francis, and Lady Godiva of Coventry (1955).
