Arthur Lubin

Arthur Lubin (Los Angeles, CA, USA, 1898 - Glendale, CA, USA, 1995) moved around a lot in his childhood and youth: Arizona, then San Diego, and finally New York. There, he started performing on stage in a few comedies that weren’t particularly successful, which prompted him to move again, this time to Los Angeles. He had better luck in cinema, so much so that the “Los Angeles Times” named him one of the talented young actors of 1925. As he later admitted, his experience as a performer turned out to be fundamental later on in his prolific career as a filmmaker. He directed several features, including Phantom of the Opera (1943), New Orleans (1947), the series of movies starring the mule Francis, and Lady Godiva of Coventry (1955).
