How do people live in a city in Southern Italy, a few meters from a coal-burning power plant and one of Europe’s largest petrochemical factories? What remains of the initial promises of progress? Two farmers and an environmentalist scuba diver with a contradictory profile try to show the damage wrought to the economy and to public health. And yet the press agent at the power plant tells a diametrically different story. Thus, as cultural and sporting events financed by the industries take place, the truth and justice remain as suspended and indecipherable as in a Kafkaesque trial.

Corrado Punzi
Corrado Punzi (Lecce, 1979) graduated in communication sciences in Bologna with a thesis on documentary film; since 2010 he has been a researcher in philosophy of law at the University of Salento. He concentrates on topics such as power and identity, about which he has written the monographs Democrazia come paradosso and Ettore Majorana o del diritto all’alterità. He has written and directed various short films and documentaries on topics such as prisons (I nostri volti, 2005), the war in Burundi between Hutus and Tutsis (Petit Pays, 2008), the struggles of female tobacco workers in Salento (Di chi sei figlio, 2009), the Chilean dictatorship (Dove, i miei occhi, 2007, and Fresia, 2013) and environmental pollution in Taranto (I quattro elementi, 2014). He is a member of the independent film collective Muud Film.

Under Frederick II, the Apulian city of Brindisi experienced its highpoint of cultural and commercial prestige. But today, the only things which bear witness to that glorious past are a few monuments, and the emperor’s name only recalls that of Italy’s biggest coal-burning power plant: the Centrale Enel Federico II.”
