BULLI E PUPE

BULLI E PUPE
by Steve Della Casa, Chiara Ronchini
Country: Italy
Year: 2018
Duration: 80'

A journey through post-WWII Italy, when the young people who had been powerless witnesses of the horrors of the conflict began to plan a new future for themselves, full of hope but also with many contradictions which inevitably came to the fore. Dances, songs, centuries-old traditions, and sudden changes: archival images counterpointed by analyses which the most clear-eyed intellectuals of the time were already proposing in real time.

Chiara Ronchini

(Marino, Rome, 1976) began as a film editor but over the years, following her passions and her intuition, she primarily turned her hand to directing. Her research on archival material is a consideration of the re-signification of audiovisual material, to reflect in turn on contemporary times in a political, cultural, and anthropological key. Her writing through images is always guided by a feminist gaze, careful to capture the complexity of the stories she composes and recounts. Her most recent works as a film editor and director include Nessuno ci può giudicare (2017) and Bulli e pupe - Una storia sentimentale degli anni ’50 (2018), both of which she made with Steve Della Casa. Nessuno ci può giudicare also won a Silver Ribbon.

Declaration

film director

“The 1950s in Italy are usually described as the cold war years, the contrast between Catholics and Communists. While working with the archives, we saw  how the images were also telling another story. And by reading and listening to the theses which intellectuals from various political sides proposed in that period, we realized that the hopes and contradictions of those years could also be recounted in a different light, like a progression whose protagonists were the young generations, the same ones which would revolutionize the entire world during the following decade.”
