Declaration

film director

“Whether I’m working with fiction or documentaries, I always start by searching for an image. Here I gambled over mixing fiction and cinéma-vérité, which I also did by inserting moments from set and location searches. I wanted to introduce real life into the movie. To the point of losing track of where the film ends and reality begins. I started with a very loose subject, putting actors in real situations and letting them improvise with people in the streets of New York. The movie turned into magic. It presented me with surprises and moments of grace. I wanted to shoot a film that reflected the gravity of existence with the freshness of life.”
