The house is ninety years old and it has a bad reputation: too many violent deaths have marked its history, its architecture is too extravagant. Not one straight wall, not one door set square, as the paranormal expert points out to the two clairvoyant assistants who assist him in his research. Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson, Wise directs a chilling movie, with its sounds, hisses, blows, distorted perspectives. The house envelopes its inhabitants and generates ghosts.
