For 15 years, the “gypsy camp” at Lungo Stura Lazio, in Turin (the so-called “Platz”), existed in Turin's northern suburbs. It was one of the biggest shanty towns in western Europe. La versione di Jean is the story of a man who used his cell phone to film and record various moments of daily life at that camp, until it was razed to the ground. Now, in that large space that has remained empty after it was cleared out, his memories resurface.

Manuela Cencetti
(Turin, Italy) is an anthropologist and video-maker. She was a co-founder of the cultural association i313 and a programmer for nine editions of the Festival Cinemainstrada - Festival di Popoli and of Cinema di Strada in Turin. She has lived in Guatemala, where she created the collective Cine en la Calle, which led to the Festival Cine en la Calle in various outlying areas of the country. She has made and edited various short films, including, in 2013, the documentary La mia strada è il mondo intero, which she made with Stella Iannitto and shot in the shanty towns in Turin's suburbs. The project was the basis for La versione di Jean.

Jean Diaconescu
(Romania) and has been living in Italy for many years. A former professional boxer, he has worked as a chauffeur, truck driver, and many other things. Since 2015, he has been using his cell phone to film police operations involving the inhabitants of the shanty town at Lungo Stura Lazio, in Turin, and, starting the next year, the forced evacuation of many other camps and settlements in various areas of the city. La versione di Jean is his first documentary.

Stella Iannitto
(Turin, Italy) has been working for several years as the writer and producer of documentaries and fiction films. She collaborated with the association i313 on the festival Cinemainstrada and with Officina Koinè on the development and production of documentary projects. In 2013, she and Manuela Cencetti made La mia strada è il mondo intero, a documentary shot in the shanty town in Turn's suburbs and the departure point for their following film, La versione di Jean.

“This movie speaks primarily through the images shot by the inhabitants of the camp. For once, it is a point of view from the inside. It is the story of a time, of a life spent in a camp that went from an overpopulated place to a deserted and alienating space. To us, proposing this version of the facts didn't mean constructing a more truthful or credible version, but rather, investigating the voices and gazes that had never been taken into consideration before. Jean is this movie's guide, in every sense; he lived in the camp for many years and he knows the stories and the most secret corners.”
