Missouri, 1865: after the end of the Civil War, Henry Carson, a former teacher who fought on the winning pro-North side, shows up at the house where the farmer Gill MacBean, his wife Sairy, and their two children Lissy and Andrew live. Another son, Ben, enlisted years before in the Southern army and it’s unlikely he’ll return. Henry offers to help the MacBean family work the land and repair the damage done by gangs who punish sympathizers of the defeated South. Despite the suspicions of Gill, who doesn’t trust Henry’s overly kind ways, Henry is welcomed by the family, and in particular by Lissy, who falls in love with him. Thanks to Henry, the tension in the small town where the MacBeans live slowly dissipates and during a town gathering serenity seems to return to the former enemies. But Henry is hiding a secret and the real reason why he showed up at the MacBeans’ door soon emerges.
