Declaration

film director

“The American Civil War represents the center of gravity in contemporary history: the promise of political equality and racial justice. But it also contained its biggest disappointments. Contrary to what had been promised, white supremacy continued to dominate the modern industrial society that was meant to replace the old colonial world. With Julius, I wanted to depict this turning point through the lives of those who were most impacted: the people who had lived in bondage for generations. Faced with newfound freedom, and forced to fend for themselves, they were confronted with a new question which we still consider today: What does it mean to be free?”
