In 1990, the legendary folk singer Rosa Balistreri, also known as “the voice of Sicily” and “the singer from the south,” is at the height of her career but maybe also at the end of her life. As she tries everything she can to reconnect with her daughter, Rosa’s memories of the past torment her and take her back to the most important moments of her life and work. She dedicated herself to defending the weak, the working class, and abused women, and fought against every misuse of power. At the same time, she was close to the world of Italian music, theatre, and art, thanks to her encounters with Dario Fo, Andrea Camilleri, Franca Rame, and Renato Guttuso. The story of Rosa’s destiny reveals the soul of an extraordinary artist and the spirit of a rebel.

Declaration
film director
“L’amore che ho, which takes its name from the title of one of Rosa’s songs (originally L’amuri ca v’haiu, literally ‘the love I have for you’) tells the story of the Sicilian singer’s life. The story takes on an important quality, not only thanks to the cultural significance of the protagonist but because it recounts a period in history, between the 1960s and the ‘80s, that was crucial for Italy and the entire world. A moment of change, ferment, and social and cultural unrest. Figures revolve around Rosa who represent true symbols of that philosophy and those battles, such as Dario Fo, Renato Guttuso, and Andrea Camilleri. Rosa was an incredibly multifaceted, tormented person, always swinging between great love and extreme violence. Able to bear contrasting feelings, ready to kill - but also to die -for love.”
