by Colin Nixon
Country: Canada
Year: 2024
Duration: 23'

In the midst of an immigration crisis, Bertrand, a Haitian asylum seeker, enters Canada as a last resort. Waiting at the immigration camp, the lone traveler keeps to himself, although little Neli begins to crack his shell. As rumours of mass deportation begin to spread amongst asylum seekers, Bertrand awaits nightfall to escape into the woods. In a nearby isolated country house, Jessy is obsessively surveilling his property through his hunting cameras. Growing paranoid about a usual dot in incoming images, he neglects keeping an eye on his epileptic daughter Madison, angering his wife Alex. Unsettled, Jessy leaves the house for his night shift. Getting in bed, Alex is alarmed by Madison who hears unfamiliar noises from outside.

Declaration

film director

“In a context of political polarization, notably around immigration, someone’s trying to get in casts an equal look at two colliding trajectories. The film exposes a possible outcome of noncommunication between communities and individuals. Cinema offers the opportunity to imagine a dialog between the characters of Bertrand and Jessy. It is a glimpse at asylum seeking, and a glance at radicalization. Two realities that are often swept under the rug, but that can be better understood with the act of listening. I started writing the script at a moment I feared something terrible could happen to loved ones based on their identity. That said, with the precious help of script consultants, I discovered biases in my own work. This leads to leaning into the concept of perspective in the film itself, and inviting the spectators to consider their own viewpoint when confronted with uncertainty”.
