Pu Yi's life as a commoner after he had been reeducated. There are flashback of his life as an Emperor: his wedding, his concubines, his eunuchs. Also about his marriage to Shu Qien Lee, their relationship as "little people" as opposed to his life in the Palace. After his "reeducation", his work to write a book about his life as an Emperor and then about his life as a "commoner". The film also stresses how the Communists treated him and his royal family, as well as their relatives. Shu Qien Lee says: "He never learned to care for others whilst he was the Emperor and he never learned to take care of himself once he became a commoner". The film emphasizes the differences between the Qing Dynasty, when the Japanese ruled in China and after the Communists took over.

Li Han hsiang

Li Han Hsiang was born in 1926 (Jingzhou, Liaoning), China. Studied in the Beijing National School of Fine Arts specializing in western painting; later joined The Shanghai Drama School. Came to Hong Kong in 1948, working his way up in the movie business, first as a designer assistant director and also script-writer. In 1954, Lee directed his first film, A Red Flower In Snow. Up to now he has directed over 70 films. He was a five time award winner in the Asian Film Festival and won countless Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. His major works include, Roar Entrance, The Winter, Ti Ying, The Last Tempest, Hsi Shih, The Kingdom and the Beauty, The Burning of the Imperial Palace and Reign Behind the Curtain.
