Part I The northern Ching dynasty has conquered the Ming dynasty (ruled by the Han race). Min, one of the chiefs of an antiChing secret society, is captured while attempting to convince the new Emperor Chien Lung, who is said to belong to the Han race, to recover the Ming throne. Chan, the new young chief of the society sets off to free Min: in the process he saves Jade Plume, the daughter of an IsIamic Chiet. Chan meets the Emperor: they become friends and the Emperor agrees to release Min if Chan agrees to destroy the letter which gives the Emperor away as a member of the Han race. But the Emperor breaks his word and tries to capture Chan. The Emperor is then kidnapped and forced to join the antiChing movement.
Part II While travelling in the desert to reach the camp of the Islamic tribe, Chan meets a fabulously beautiful girl, Princess Fragrance, Jade Plume's younger sister They fall in love. The chief of the tribe refuses to become a vassal of the Emperor: going to the enemy camp as tribal envoys, Princess Fragrance and Chan are trapped in a desert hollow. Jade Plume rescues them. After Chan's departure, the girls' father is killed and Princess Fragrance captured by the Emperor who asks Chan to convince the girl to yeld to him, in exchange for his support to the antiChing band. But the Emperor plans to destroy the band at the banquet. Princess Fragrance kills herself in the attempt to warn Chan. Only Chan and Jade Plume survive the massacre.

Ann Hui
Ann Hui was born in 1947 in Anshan, Liaoning Province in China and moved to Honk Kong in her youth. After graduating with a M.A. from University of Hong Kong in English and Comparative Literature in 1972, she spent two years at the London Film School. On returning to Hong Kong, she worked as an assistant to director King Hu. She subsequently joined TVB where she directed short documentaries in Asia and Mexico for the series Wonder fun (1975), and for the drama series CID (1976), and Social Worker (1977). In 1977 she produced and directed 8 hour-Iong TV episodes for the Independent Commission Against Corruption of which two were censored. She joined Radio Television Hong Kong in 1978 and made three films for the series Below the Lion Rock. She made her feature debut in 1979.
