THE MEND

THE MEND
by John Magary
Country: USA
Year: 2014
Duration: 111'

Mat, a slacker who has been soured by the passing years, goes to a party at his brother Alan’s home in Harlem. He learns that his brother and his live-in partner Farrah are leaving to go on a trip to Quebec, and the next day he moves into the apartment with his girlfriend and her son. Quite a surprise for Alan, who returns home from his vacation unexpectedly and, above all, without Farrah… But it doesn’t take long before the situation takes an explosive turn. Explosively funny.

Biography

film director

John Magary

John Magary (Dallas, TX, USA) studied at Williams College and Columbia University, and debuted in directing in 2003 with the short What’s It Like There? His next two movies, Our National Parks (2006) and The Second Line (2007), were selected for the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Waves section of the Torino Film Festival, respectively. As an essayist, he received a Grand Marnier Film Fellowship for his essay Shock to the System: Adolfo Aristarain’s Time for Revenge (2003), which was later published in “Film Comment Magazine.” Even though The Mend (2014) marked his debut in feature films, “Filmmaker Magazine” included Magary on its list of the twenty-five new indie directors to keep an eye on.

Declaration

film director

“The big thing that drove the making of the movie, even when we were writing, was mixing tones willy-nilly. This is something I love about Desplechin and a lot of Korean filmmakers – it doesn’t matter if this scene is sad and that scene is funny. They can be right next to each other and you don’t have to answer for it. Just put them next to each other and see what happens.”
