CINEMA NÔVO / IMPROVISIERT UND ZIELBEWURSZT

CINEMA NÔVO / IMPROVISED AND GOAL-ORIENTED

Country: Brazil
Year: 1967
Duration: 45'

This film confirms the growing interest that the films of the new Brazilian cinema are awakening abroad. It was produced and narrated by K. M. Eckstein for German television's Channel 2. Its function was to present and introduce a series of screenings of Brazilian feature films that are to be shown in Europe. Eckstein usually produces and directs his own films, but he preferred in this case to trust one of us to make Improvisiert und Zielbewurszt, i. e. Improvised and Goal-oriented. In this way, he made his investigative film a piece of information about Brazilian direct-cinema. We were armed with an Éclair 16mm camera, which was without sound and synchronized by cable to a Nagra tape recorder. We accompanied the directors who were working in Rio de Janeiro during the time when were supposed to be working on the film. In this way, some of the most important directors of the Cinema Nôvo appear almost by chance. Meanwhile, others - such as, Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Glauber Rocha, Domingos de Oliveira, Arnaldo Jabór or Carlos Diegues - were followed by our camera when they were at work in the various phases of film production: the screenwriting of Carota de Ipanema, shooting of El justíceiro and Terra em transe, the editing of Opinião pública, the dubbing of Todas as mulheres do mundo and the release of A grande cidade.
