by Erika Rossi, Giuseppe Tedeschi

Year: 2014

Trieste, 1973. In the empty ward of the insane asylum San Giovanni, a group of artists builds Marco Cavallo: a large horse made of wood and papier-mâché that ideally contains the dreams of the inmates. The horse will travel throughout Italy to all the psychiatric secure units for the criminally insane. Thirteen days, 4418 kilometers (2745 miles), and sixteen cities to remind society that the mad man who committed a crime is also a man in need of care and cure.

Declaration

film director

“In a country that has been indifferent for too long, where the political debate is often reduced to chatter, it is almost impossible to hear the voices of those who have been reduced to silence by an old fascist law, locked away in facilities that restrain them without providing actual treatment. For these people, time seems to have stopped the moment they were convicted. The film explores the untamed resilience of those who do not want to give up in the face of injustice through the strength of a symbol born forty years ago, Marco Cavallo. Its power still reveals the discrepancies of an anachronistic form of psychiatry, a decrepit legal code, and the need for a fresh approach and new norms.”
