A Swedish family is spending their winter holiday in the French Alps. Everything is perfect: from the hotel to the ski slopes. But one day, while they are having lunch in an alpine shelter, an avalanche starts rushing down the mountain. Panic quickly spreads in the restaurant. Luckily the avalanche changes direction: but something just as devastating will crush the family.
Ruben Östlund (Styrsö, Sweden, 1974) studied filmmaking at the University of Gothenburg, and it was here that he met producer Erik Hemmendorff, with whom he later founded Plattform Produktion. Incident by a Bank won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 2010. His first feature, The Guitar Mongoloid, was awarded a FIPRESCI Prize in Moscow. His second feature, Involuntary (2008), was selected at Cannes’ Un certain regard, and his third, Play (2008), premiered at Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes 2011, where it won a Coup de cœur. Turist picked up the Un certain regard jury prize in Cannes.

“This particular story came about from an anecdote that I found impossible to forget. Some years ago, a Swedish couple – friends of mine – were on holiday in Latin America when suddenly, out of nowhere, gunmen appeared and opened fire; the husband instinctively ran for cover, leaving his wife unprotected. Back in Sweden, she could not stop, after a glass of wine or two, telling the story over and over again... My imagination fired, and I began to research other true stories like this one. […] In such extreme situations, people can react in completely unexpected and exceedingly selfish ways.”
