JOHN WAYNE HATED HORSES
One hot summer day a father is working out in the courtyard of his
house. In the meantime his young son is blithely playing with missiles
and cannons, surrounded by tanks. The man enters his son’s room and
observes the toy soldiers the boy had been playing with and is shocked
by the unmanly and unmilitary way the toy soldiers are placed.
He decides that the moment has come to show his son the right
way to be a man, to see the world and to play with toy soldiers.
“It’s kind of fitting that the film turned out being about boredom,
because it’s something I have a very big difficult time with: in between
projects, the process never seems to go fast enough for me, so I’m
always kind of struggling to write something and trying to keep
making films, as much as I possibly can. I shot with my old trusty
Aaton Super-16 camera and a very small crew, it’s just me, the
director of photography, the sound guy and someone sort of assisting.”

Andrew T. Betzer
Andrew T. Betzer (Washington, DC, USA, 1974) graduated from the University of Maryland in 2000 and in 1999 realized his first short film, Diet Pink Lemonade, followed by Ivan Runs Some Errands, Runs Amok in 2004 (screened at the Belfort International Film Festival) and, two years later, by Sans supervision, which premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival. In 2008, he wrote and directed Small Apartment, winning the Grand Jury Award for best narrative short at the South by Southwest Film Festival. In the same year John Wayne Hated Horses was selected in the 2009 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and presented at the Torino Film Festival. Recently, a retrospective of his short films was shown at New York’s Anthology Film Archives. Young Bodies Heal Quickly is his first feature film.
