Perry is a successful comedian who performs in a theater in San Francisco. One fine day he discovers that his relationship with his audience is strictly mechanical. So, he begins a series of investigations and experiments to try to break down the wall which he feels exists between himself and the audience. But, despite his boxoffice and critical success, he never reaches the goal he set for himself. He goes off and retires in a little town on the coast. His close relationship to a local young woman, however, turns out to be nothing more than a return to his need to have an audience. This attitude of his takes the woman to the point of leaving him. She then listens to a tape of one of his monologues with him and discovers that Perry has learned to laugh at himself and his defects.
