Harvey Middleman, a New York City fireman, lives happily in a New Jersey suburb with his wife and two small children. Harvey likes his work and imagines that someday he will rescue a beautiful young woman from a fire. Then he rescues Lois, a model, kisses her as he resuscitates her and falls in love. After secretly dating her several times, Harvey decides he must solve his moral dilemma by consulting a psychiatrist, Mrs. Koogleman, whose preoccupation with her own extramarital relations precludes the possibility of helping Harvey find a solution. Another fire breaks out in Lois's apartment, and Harvey's associate Dinny rescues the model while Harvey saves a cat. Lois falls in love with Dinny, and Harvey returns to his family.
