Tickits is a poignant and lightly comical look at one day in the life of Toby HeckIer, a dyslexic ten year old boy. Toby canvases his town issuing tickets to people for things he sees as wrong. One ticket is for an inconsiderately parked car that takes up two spaces, another is to a man who litters. The encounters continue until, at the end of the day. Toby returns home to his verbally abusive mother. He seeks refuge in his room. Sheltered there, he cites her for too much drinking, and too much yelling: and instead of giving her the tickets, Toby adds them to the others in a shoebox labeled 'Muthers Tickits' that he keeps hidden under his bed.
Tickits reminds one of how we all affect those around us, from the seemingly insignificant bit of paper thrown to the ground to the more obvious ways that we treat one another. Toby is doing what he can to make his town, and ultimately the world, a better place. The story's author, Paul Milenski, put it well when he said, "Toby is the moral conscience of our age".
