19° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL
Tribute to Shadi Abdu Al Salam

Salama fi khair

Salama is Well
by Niazi Mustafa
Country: Egypt
Year: 1937
Duration: 100'

Salama works as an errand boy in Kahlil's stores. He has to take a large sum of money to the bank, but since the bank is closed when he arrives, he spends the night in a hotel so that the money is safe from possible housebreakers. The errand boy finds himself in trouble when he is mistaken for prince Kindahar.

"Salama is filmed in a very 'natural' style. After two years working as an editor, Studio Misr agreed to produce the first film I ever directed. I directed, wrote and edited the film with the help of Mohammad Abdu Al Adhim. Nagib Al Rihani and Badi'e Khairi wrote excellent dialogues, but they were rather inexpert as far as screenwriting goes (…) Al Rihani is the best actor I have ever worked with in all my life" (Niazi Mustafa, in an interview with Samir Farid, published in "Al Funu" [The Arts], October 1982).
