IL BELL'ANTONIO

BELL'ANTONIO
by Mauro Bolognini
Country: Italy
Year: 1960
Duration: 105'

Back in Catania after a long period in Rome which has labelled him as a ladies’ man, Antonio Magnano agrees to marry Barbara, solicitor Puglisi’s beautiful daughter. But a year after the wedding, Antonio’s father, don Alfio, is visited by his son’s father-in-law: since Barbara still happens to be a virgin, the family has already set in motion a request for annulment with the Sacred Roman Rota. Antonio’s impotence thus becomes public knowledge. His deep depression is contrasted by the vehemence with which don Alfio tries to reassert the family’s manly pride.

Declaration

film director

“There was already some Pasolinian atmosphere in the Innamorati, even though the mood was a bit more tender. I had just met him and I wanted to do something with him, but at that time he was not a well-known author so it was not possible to involve him. Therefore Pasolini did not collaborate for Innamorati; however the film has certain aspects that foreshadow his themes a little. […] Afterwards we made La notte brava, Bell’Antonio, La giornata balorda together.”
