Declaration

film director

“To annul authorship when trying to archive reality, to only listen to the voice of the images, trying to cancel out one’s own presence, which is always an interference, above all when it declares it isn’t one… But it’s hard to observe through the lenses without enjoying that which you see. Canes, in the local dialect of Lecce paleddhu or pileddhu (from small hair), are plants that grow in swampy areas and just off the beaches. Since the mid-1800s, working canes has been the economic sustenance of many families from Acquarica, but starting in the 1960s reclamation of the swamplands, the arrival of new plastic materials and emigration marked the decline of the activity. Today, this art only survives thanks to a handful of women and men who courageously continue to ply their trade. Henri Focillon said that the hand is not the docile servant of the mind: it researches, it gets by in its stead, it traverses all sorts of adventures.”
