The fanatical bird-watcher Roy Tunt only needs to spot one example of the very rare Sociable Plover to complete his maniacal cataloguing of English birds. Hidden in a bird hide in the Suffolk swamps, he is interrupted by the arrival of a stranger who looks and behaves the opposite of him. Although he is a bit intimidated by the new arrival’s tattooed arms, the ornithologist can’t help correcting the other man’s grammar, underlining the cultural differences between them and transforming the isolated refuge into a place full of tension.

Marek Losey
Marek Losey (UK, 1971), at sixteen years of age, became a runner on film productions, then moving on to become assistant director for music videos, shorts and TV shows. In 1994, he began directing commercials for major companies, such as Diesel Jeans and Coca-Cola, which were very successful in sector rivalries. In 2006, he directed the short Killing Me Softly and two years later debuted in feature films with The Hide, which participated at various international film festivals, including the São Paulo Film Festival in Brazil.

“Whilst the name Losey has undoubtedly opened doors, it also carries with it the pressure of being synonymous with great avant garde cinema, I felt the weight of expectation on my shoulders. And so there was a reluctance on my part to take the step into cinema. Perhaps the most significant influence Joe’s film making has had on me is the way he was able to subvert the audiences’ expectations of his characters. I feel that I have inherited a fascination with moral ambiguity and what we read between the lines.”
