THE HILL

THE HILL
by Zimmerfrei
Country: Italy
Year: 2011
Duration: 40'

Copenhagen is a completely flat city. The only high ground in town rises in the working-class borough of Nørrebro: in a quadrangular courtyard surrounded by buildings there is a round hill. It is an artificial hill covering the public gym, built against the will of some of the locals who were afraid of losing the common area of the open-air courtyard. The documentary, which was filmed entirely above and around this hill, captures the inhabitants’ attitudes and their progressive familiarization with the film and with one another; it takes wings with the visions and dreams of the people living in that neighborhood, working there every day, using that space and transforming it.

Biography

film director

. Zimmerfrei

ZimmerFrei (Italy) is an art collective created by Massimo Carozzi, Anna de Manincor, and Anna Rispoli. It originated in Bologna in 2000, and has now spread to its hometown and Brussels. Combining cinema, visual arts, music, and performance pieces, the group’s artistic approach explores urban environments, both real and imaginary, searching for the boundaries between public and private spaces. While still experimenting with performance art, in recent years ZimmerFrei has been focusing more on artistic documentaries. The Torino Film Festival paid tribute to the collective in the Onde section of its 2012 edition, screening a selection of their work.

Declaration

film director

“One would think that at least in death, uncertainty should end. But in so far as I have no idea of where I am, of what I am, or how long I am to remain in this state, uncertainty appears to be enduring. […] For the record, I have a strong suspicion that you can die here, too.” (Philip Roth, Indignation)
