THE HUMAN VOICE

THE HUMAN VOICE
by Ted Kotcheff
Country: USA
Year: 1966
Duration: 50'

“Cocteau’s monologue, in which a woman alone in her apartment is having a phone conversation with her lover who is leaving with her for another woman, is an exceptional piece of theatre, which I had already recorded in the past. […] We filmed the movie in two days, without any possibility to delay. […] The first day was a wreck. Four cameras were following me up close, but I never knew which one was working at any given time. The four production assistants were constantly mumbling into their microphones, which was a major source of nuisance. I was so unfocused that I kept forgetting my lines, with the result that, by the end of the first day, we were only able to shoot ‘three’ minutes out of the show’s fifty. […] Luckily, the next day I returned to the studios, after a good night of sleep, well disposed and ready to deal with all the inconveniences that had bothered me the first day, and the work proceeded swiftly, allowing us to finish within the allotted time.” (Ingrid Bergman, Alan Burgess, My Story)
