CLEMENTINA

CLEMENTINA
by Augustin Mendilaharzu, Costanza Feldman
Country: Argentina
Year: 2023
Duration: 109'

Everyone is in lockdown, but Clementina and the man she's quarantined with don't stop working. We know little about him: he teaches something, is elusive and coward, and obsessively collects objects that populate his house like an invading army. And what do we know about her? Even less: we barely see her face, a mysterious face that seems strong enough to deal with uncertainty, with danger, with adversity.

Declaration

film director

“In 1964, a Swiss journalist asks Violeta Parra about her foray into tapestry. ‘I came to it because of need,’ Violeta replies. ‘I was sick and I had to stay in bed for eight months. I told myself: I can’t stay here without doing anything. I found some thread and a piece of cloth and tried to make something out of it. But nothing good came of it, because I didn't know what I wanted to do. So I took the same piece of cloth again and decided to make a flower. When I finished, I saw that it was a bottle and not a flower. I wanted to put a cork in the bottle, but the cork turned out to be a head. I made the eyes, the nose, the mouth… and she was no longer a flower or a bottle: she was a woman.’ In 2020, in an apartment in Buenos Aires, a dancer-actress and a cameraman-playwright look for a way to occupy their days of confinement. They have a camera and they start filming. At first they are documentary images. Then her face and her body appear and Fiction, timidly, begins to appear. They work with what reality provides and then transmute it. They believe they are making a short film, then another, and then plenty others. The game grows and completely takes over their lives. With infinite innocence first, with infinite responsibility later, they begin to understand that they are making a film. This film.”
