ERA SCRITTO SUL MARE

ERA SCRITTO SUL MARE
by Giuliana Gamba
Country: Italy
Year: 2023
Duration: 60

The story of the Sicilian island of Marettimo and its inhabitants, men and women who, during the early 1900s, stowed away on cargo ships heading to the United States. After arriving in Monterey Bay, California, they made the most of their knowledge of the sea and, over the years, began successful fishing activities. And from there, they set sail a second time, this time for Alaska, for the salmon fishing... The story of a grand yet unknown Italian epic, a sentimental and historical story told through images from the Archivio Luce Cinecittà and American archives.

Biography

film director

Giuliana Gamba

debuted as a director in 1984 with Profumo (Bizarre) and in 1986 made La cintura (The Belt), based on a same-titled play by Alberto Moravia. Between 1989 and 1990 for Rai 3 she made the program Reper Story, which she created and wrote, and in 1992 she made the documentary Oltre il silenzio. She continued working for TV throughout the 1990s and into 2000, directing made-for-TV movies and fictions, as well as documentaries about major exponents of the art world (such as Jannis Kounellis) and historical-social aspects of current events. She produced the movie Cover Boy by Carmine Amoroso, and in 2020 she directed the comedy Burraco fatale. She is one of the founding partners of the Venice Film Festival's Giornate degli Autori.

Declaration

film director

“Marettimo, the dolomitic cliff in the middle of the Tyrrhenian sea. It appears like a large belly that gives life to courageous men who dare the sea, to women as strong as the rocks against which the waves crash when it's stormy. It is a sacred and mysterious island. I wanted to recount the women of Marettimo and their industrious and patient waiting that recalls ancestral myths, the deep roots of our Mediterranean culture. Through a narration that combines fiction and unreleased repertory material, I reconstructed the story of Anita and Vito, an emblem of these unique and extraordinary events.
