Don Siegel
(Chicago, 1912, Nipoma, 1991) graduated from Cambridge, and debuted as a director in 1945 with two short films that won an Oscar. The director of low-budget films, Riot in Cell Block 11 (1945) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) brought him to the attention of European critics and showcased his cynical and pessimistic views. Noir films (The Lineup, 1958), westerns (Two Mules for Sister Sara, 1970) and detective films (Dirty Harry, 1971) were the favorite genres of a directors who is recognized as one of the last great authors of classic cinema.
