TRAVOLTI DA UN'INSOLITA CENSURA - TUTTO CIÒ CHE AL CINEMA NON SI PUÒ PIÙ VEDERE
by Luca Beatrice, Luigi Mascheroni
Country: Italy
Year: 2023
Duration: 40'

Long at the center of a heated debate, the expression “politically correct” has entered common discourse. Here, like abroad, the debate overlaps with the one concerning the so- called cancel culture; a complex phenomenon that has seen an increasing number of books withdrawn from commerce and movies canceled from cinemas. Today, the list of terms to adopt or avoid - so as not to incur accusations of sexism, racism, ableism, and body shaming - gets longer and longer, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid criminal consequences. All you need is a social network in order to have your say; anyone can appoint themselves a censor and undermine the freedom of expression of artists, directors, and authors. Like the blockbuster Gone With the Wind, which was canceled from (and later re-introduced into) the catalog of the US broadcaster HBO, many movie classics have been disputed and excluded from streaming platforms. Through editing of over twenty clips from iconic movies - from La città delle donne by Federico Fellini (1980) to Il sorpasso by Dino Risi (1962), Dramma della gelosia by Ettore Scola (1970), and Amici miei by Mario Monicelli (1982) –, Travolti da un’insolita censura asks the question: “Is it right that works of art be subjected to the judgment of ethics or, worse, of morals? Might we perhaps be exaggerating?”
