ABRUXIA

Documentary about the struggle of the Sardinian miners for their jobs in 1993.

"'Abruxia' ('It's burning!') is the cry that is shaking the mountains. It is what the miners yell out when they are about to blow up a dynamite charge. Today it is a scream of rage. It is the scream that rises up out of the 'cities that live under the earth' in southwest Sardinia. Today other people are claiming the right to decide for them: liquidation, unemployment status, and dismantling. Their zinc and lead are not competitive any more. ENI is running at a loss. Despite all of this, the 'city that lives under the earth' knows perfectly that it is its right and also its duty to demand alternative solutions that do not dissipate its cultural patrimony and the professional competence that has accumulated over the last two centuries. Abruxia takes a picture of a hard moment, of a highly conscious witnessing, and of the experience of solidarity and participation by everyone, not only the miners. For, the case of the miners in Sulcis is an exemplary one, a metaphor for all the rapacious economic strategies supported by ambiguous policies. Abruxia is dedicated Io the profession of people who work underground, but also to all who are working lo take off the shackles that penalize their economy."
