«The decision to leave for Crotone was as sudden as the news broadcast that the workers had barricaded themselves in a factory among the phosphorous fires and the polices tear gas. This was a long voyage with the students of the Video School of Social Documentation of 'I Cammelli'. On this occasion, I took them with me for a workshop in directing. (The exercise is now being edited). This is a useful experience for the school. This experience is being rounded out through Roberto Perpignani's workshop in editing the material shot for this film. CROTONE, Italy is a voyage inside the struggle fought to safeguard the existence of the industrial center of Crotone, which has been active for the last seventy years and is now being dismantled. This voyage was made through intense cooperation with the Enichem Factory Council (R.S.U.), with the women who occupied the train station, with the church, and with the entire city of Crotone. After the fire in the barrels of phosphorus and the way the TV spread the story emotionally, the national trade union (CGIL, CISL, UIL) and the government intervened to find a pragmatic solution that would prevent the episode from spreading as a symbol. The secretaries of the national political parties went briefly to the workers to promise them their full support. Reporters, politicians, economists, and intellectuals have commented in worried tones on the episode of the struggle of the workers of Crotone. CROTONE, Italy aims to make a contribution to deepen the knowledge of the reality of the South. It hopes to serve as a litmus test for understanding what is happening in Italy today."
