In 1976, the Led Zeppelin were singing Dazed and Confused. At a high school in the heart of the United States, on the last day before the summer holiday, the teachers dwell on their memories of Woodstock or Vietnam, as old and new students swarm in and out of the school entrance. Among them we notice Randy "Pink", first year student and quarterback for the school football team; and Mitch, who is just arriving at the school. Pink must decide if he is going to promise his training coach not to use drugs or alcohol on vacation... his refusal could compromise both his studies and sporting career Mitch hopes to move from the middle-class background he was raised in to the more "in" ambiance of high school. We soon meet Sabrina, another new student who doesn't hesitate to undergo some hazing of her own to join a school sorority. Amid the drinking, the sexual innuendos, the brawls and humiliations, Dazed and Confused retraces 18 hours in the lives of these young people in a cool quasi-documentary style.
"I wanted to capture the moment-to-moment reality of being a teenager with all its energy, humor and cruelty. Though I was interested in the '70's, I was also hoping to suggest a continuum of teenage experience and show that - on one level - nothing has really changed much for the American teenager in the entire post-war era." Richard Linklater
Richard Linklater (1962) grew up in Texas. Reaching adulthood he settled in Austin, where he founded, with some friends, the Austin Film Society to promote auteur filmmaking, both by American independents and by foreign directors like Godard, Tarkovsky etc. In the meantime Linklater began making experimental films in Super8. In 1991 he directed his first "professional" feature film, Slacker, made on a shoestring budget with the help of his friends.
